Technology is changing the way we live and work at a rapid-fire pace. Think for a moment about your work and the technological advancements you use there every day that were not a part of your routine just a year or two ago. Think about your home, and how advanced the electronics and appliances have become. 3-D televisions with Internet connections and washing machines that can sense what types of dirt are on your clothing are becoming commonplace. To use these conveniences, you must have a level of comfort with technology.
Now think about your child’s classroom. Are there computers? Possibly. One for every child? That’s doubtful. Is the school working to integrate the Internet, applications, wireless solutions, and other tools into your child’s learning experience? How can children be prepared to enter such a technologically advanced world if their educational environment is so far behind?
Thankfully, most children have a familiarity with computers and gadgets, and that knowledge doesn’t leave them when they enter a traditional classroom setting. But think for a moment how much richer their education could be if the tools they use at home – handheld devices, advanced video games, tablet computers, etc. – were a part of their common learning experience. The possibilities are truly endless.
A few school districts are experimenting in this area today. Money is tight for schools, especially those that rely on public funds, so those that can are working to secure grants that will allow them to purchase items like iPads for students. The problem is that these devices are so expensive that schools will never be able to afford one for each child. So what can you, as a parent, do?
Most people are not wealthy enough to bridge the funding gap. So consider integrating technology into your child’s homework and home life whenever and however you can. Teach them about the possibilities, and watch their horizons expand.
